Lowland Project Vejrumbro – Preliminary Investigation

Lowland Project – Preliminary Investigation, Vejrumbro in Nørreådalen

Viborg Municipality has concluded a preliminary investigation from 2020-2023 on the possibilities of a lowland project in Nørreådalen between Tapdrup and Vejrubro. The projects area is located within the Natura2000-area 30: “Lovns Bredning, Hjarbæk Fjord, Simested og Nørre Ådale samt Skravad Bæk” in the Natureman subregion N30-10.

Initially, the investigation area was approx. 375 ha, but during the preliminary investigation, it had been adjusted to approx. 310 ha. There are approx. 70 landowners in the area. The purpose of the projects is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from peat soil in the area by taking the land out of agricultural production and keeping it permanently saturated. This can be achieved, among other things, by blocking ditches, raising drains to surface irrigation, and rerouting streams to run closer to the surface. At the same time, the nitrogen discharge to the aquatic environment is also reduced. Currently the projects is expected to result in an overall reduction of emissions by 15 tons of CO2e per year and 7.7 tons N per year. The more natural hydrology that is created through the projects will also benefit wetland habitats and breeding birds in the area. There has been an application for implantation in November 2023.

The preliminary investigation, covering approx. 70 landowners and 3010 ha, has been concluded in 2023.
