Lowland Project Tjele Ådal – Preliminary Project

Overview map. Investigative area in Tjele Ådal in Viborg Municipality.

In 2022-2024 Viborg Municipality is concluding a preliminary investigation to explore the possibilities of establishing a lowland project in the river valley, Tjele Ådal south of Lake Tjele Langsø in Viborg Municipality. The northernmost part of the project area is located within the Natura 2000 area 33: “Tjele Langsø og Vinge Møllebæk” in Natureman subregion N33-1.

The investigation area is approx. 260 ha, involving around 60 landowners. The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from peat soil in the area by taking the land out of agricultural production and keeping it permanently saturated. Currently, the project is expected to give an overall reduction of emissions by 2,860 tonnes of CO2e per year, equivalent to 11 tonnes CO2e/ha/year. The expected nitrogen reduction is 10,400 kg N/year, equivalent to 40 kg N/ha/year.

A Lowland projects typically includes measures such as:

  • Establishing natural hydrology by closing drainage ditches
  • Raising the water level in the watercourses within the project area
  • Irrigations of meadows with drainage water

The project covers an investigation area of approx. 260 ha, involving around 60 landowners.
