Lowland Project Skals Å south of Bjerregrav – Preliminary Investigation

Viborg Municipality is conduction a preliminary investigation form 2022 to 2024 to explore the possibilities for a lowland project south of Bjerregrav in Viborg Municipality. The projects area is located in Natura 2000 area 30: “Lovns Bredning, Hjakær Fjord, Simested og Nørre Ådale samt Skravad Bæk” in Natureman subregion N30-7.

The study area covers approx. 650 ha with around 70 landowners. The projects aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from peat soil in the area by taking the land out of agricultural production and keeping it permanently saturated. Currently, the anticipated greenhouse gas reduction is a total of 8,000 tons of CO2e per year, equivalent to 10 CO2e per ha per year. The wxpected nitrogen reduction is 19,200 kg N/yeay, equivalent to 25 kg N/ha/year.

A Lowland projects typically includes measures such as:

  • Establishing natural hydrology by closing drainage ditches
  • Raising the water level in the watercourses within the project area
  • Irrigations of meadows with drainage water

The project covers an investigation area of approx. 650 ha, involving around 70 landowners.
