Lowland Project Rødsø – Preliminary Investigation
Lowland Project Rødsø – Preliminary Investigation
Viborg Municipality is conducting a preliminary investigation from 2022-2024 to explore the possibilities for a lowland project in Skals river valley by lake Rødsø in Viborg Municipality. The projects area I located within the Natura 2000 area 30: “Lovns Bredning, Hjarbæk Fjord, Simested og Nørre Ådale samt Skravad Bæk” in Natureman subregion N30-8.
The study area covers approx. 680 ha, involving around 100 landowners. The projects aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from peat soil in the area by taking the land out of agricultural production and keeping them permanently saturated. Currently, the projects is expected to give an overall reduction of emissions by 8,000 tons of CO2e per year, equivalent to 10 tons of CO2e per ha per year. The expected nitrogen reduction is 19,000 kg N/year, equivalent to 24 kg N/ha/year.
A Lowland projects typically includes measures such as:
- Establishing natural hydrology by closing drainage ditches
- Raising the water level in the watercourses within the project area
- Irrigations of meadows with drainage water
The project covers an investigation area of approx. 680 ha, involving around 100 landowners.
