Climate Lowland Project Lovns Bredning

Climate Lowland Project Lovns Bredning south of Alstrup

Map of the area.

In 2022-2023, the Dansih Nature Agency conducted a preliminary investigation of the possibilities for the lowland project Lovns Bredning, located close to Alstrup at Lovns Bredning in Limfjorden. The project area is part of Natura 2000 area 30: "Lovns Bredning, Hjarbæk Fjord, Simested og Nørre Ådal samt Skravad Bæk" in Natureman subregion N30-11.

The investigation lead to the climate-lowland project Lovns Bredning.

The project covers an area of 109 ha, involving approx. 25 landowners. Project initiatives will be to create a natural hydrology by cutting off ditches and drains, as well as making ditches and waterholes, changing drainage and possibly rerouting the Bybækken.

The project is expected to retain 1,804 tonnes of CO2e annually, corresponding to 17 tonnes of CO2e/ha/year. The expected nitrogen reduction is 2,839 kg N/year, corresponding to 26 kg N/ha/year. There is a risk of loss of phosphorus to the aquatic environment in the first years after realization of the project. It is estimated that there is a risk of phosphorus release of 146 kg/year, but this is uncertain. With the cessation of cultivation, the project contributes to reducing the discharge of nitrogen into the aquatic environment for the benefit of Lovns Bredning and the Limfjorden.

Further information about the project can be found on the Danish Nature Agency website: Klima-lavbundsprojekt - Lovns Bredning.
