Wetland, Lowland and Water Course Projects

Wetland, lowland and water course projects

LIFE IP Natureman will integrate various activities in order to solve several issues at once. In addition to the physical measures such as clearing, fencing and grazing onthenaturalareas, applications will be made for lowland, wetland and watercourse projects etc.

Wetland Projects

The wetlands are effective filters which reduce nitrogen emissions. The wetlands are typically made by interrupting drains and ditches. When the soil is water-saturated, nitrogen is converted. When watercourses are re-meandered and consequently flood the meadows, phosphorus is retained.

The size of the wetlands can range from a few hectares of wet meadows to large lakes with a depth of several meters of water.

Mini-wetlands are a special type of wetlands, where the water from a larger drainage system is led through an artificial lake before it flows into the watercourses. The purpose is to remove nitrogen from the drainage water. Mini-wetlands can be made on a few hectares.

Lowland Projects

Lowland projects are made in river valleys with a high content of peat in the soil. By interrupting drains and ditches the water level is raised and thus the soil is prevented from settling. Lowland projects reduce CO2 emissions and also reduce nitrogen emissions from the meadows.

Watercourse Projects

Watercourse projects must improve the condition of the rivers and streams. They remove barriers, re-meanders streams, lay spawning gravel etc. The projects are carried out in order to make least possible changes to natural areas close to the watercourse.
