Lowland Project Kvorning – Preliminary Investigation

In 2020-2022, the Danish Nature Agency concludes a preliminary investigation on the possibilities for a lowland project in Kvorning, located in Nørre Ådalen, south of Kvorning and Mollerup, approx. midway between Viborg and Randers in Viborg Municipality. The project area is located in Natura 2000 area 30: "Lovns Bredning, Hjarbæk Fjord, Simested og Nørre Ådal samt Skravad Baek" in Natureman subregion N30-11.

The investigation area covers 430 ha. Project actions will be to create a natural hydrology by interrupting ditches and drains, and if possible to raise and re-meandering internal inflows to the area.

The project is expected to retain 5,676 tonnes of CO₂e annually, corresponding to 13.2 tons of CO₂e/ha/year. The project will simultaneously reduce the discharge of nitrogen into Randers Fjord by 13 tonnes/year. The expected nitrogen reduction is 13,058 kg N/year, corresponding to 30 kg N/ha/year. With the outlined project, it´s calculated that there would be an annual release of phosphorus of approx. 1,324.6 kg P. However, this is not critical in relation to the P cut-off value for Randers Fjord. Overall, the project will contribute to improving the environmental condition and make better conditions for flora and fauna in Randers Fjord, and the stream quality in several smaller streams will improve. The project will improve the biodiversity and cohesion of habitats and nature types in the Natura 2000 area.
