Important calcareous grassland cleared for shrubs in the Skindbjerg gorge

In the early spring of 2019, Rebild Municipality has carried out a clearing project on calcareous grassland in the Skindbjerg gorge. The clearing was done as part of LIFE IP Natureman's activities for "Special management species and habitats".

Clearing in the Skindbjerg gorge

The grassland, which has been cleared, is the habitat for the orchid Neotinea ustulata. In addition, species such as Campanula persicifoliaSanguisorba minorHelianthemum nummulariumLinum catharticumCarex montanaCrepis praemorsa and previously Tephroseris integrifolia, which has sadly disappeared. These are all light-demanding species that will gradually disappear if the area is not kept open.

On the calcareous grassland with Neotinea ustulata mainly Prunus spinose, species of roses and some trees were cleared. On the other side of the gorge, thinning was done of a Picea sitchensis plantation. This was done to provide a more open habitat for the orchid Cypripedium calceolus growing here.

The area is fenced and Black Angus cattle graze it.  The cattle have access to both the grassland in the Skindbjerg gorge and the meadows in a part of Lindenborg Ådal. It is our hope that after the clearing, the cattle will be able to stop the growth of Prunus spinose, species of roses and trees, keeping the grasslands open for the benefit of the characteristic plants and animals that live there.
